Hi! My name is Megan Garland. I'm a 23 year old emerging international development and policy professional. I'm currently a graduate student at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies studying for my Masters in Public Administration and Peace Corps Masters International joint degree. My undergraduate degrees are Chinese and International Studies focused in diplomacy in East Asia including Chinese Language Flagship certification. I love traveling and have spent half of my academic life studying abroad (5 times to China and 1 time with Semester at Sea). My interests include minority rights, environmental justice, women's empowerment, economic development, qualitative and quantitative research, and MEL (monitor, evaluation & learning).
Many are probably wondering what brought me to Rwanda!
We are all participating in a program through the MIIS called DPMI: A program for aspiring international development and social change practitioners who are seeking a professional certificate in program design, partnering, management, and innovation.
At the real site of "Hotel Rwanda"
The focus of this course revolves around HIV, public health, gender, and education issues in the Rwandan context. Training also covers social marketing as a public health tool. Project planning, facilitation, and partnerships are covered in the classroom with 2-3 days devoted to “real-life” client projects with Partners in Health, a NGO co-founded by Nobel Peace Prize nominee and author Paul Farmer (read Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracey Kidder- it's all about his journey!), and the Rwanda Ministry of Health. Working side by side with African professionals from leading NGOs to develop innovative solutions that address local priorities, we will gain skills in design and project assessment in sustainable development, fostering participatory development (with a focus on education), leading change, measuring progress, crafting attractive funding proposals, and using data to communicate results.
